Once available only by prescription, anti-snoring devices are now commonly used to help reduce or even eliminate snoring. SnoreRx, founded in 2009, was the first brand to offer an anti-snoring mouthpiece approved by the FDA for over-the-counter use. Today, the SnoreRx provides a customizable device designed to minimize snoring and help you get more restful sleep.

We’ll review the SnoreRx’s design and performance characteristics so you can decide if it’s a good fit for you.

SnoreRx Mouthpiece: Our Verdict

Made from medical grade copolymer plastic, the SnoreRx is a mandibular advancement device (MAD) designed to gently draw the lower jaw forward during sleep. Adjusting the jaw in this way opens the upper airway to allow for better airflow, which can prevent snoring.

The SnoreRx’s boil-and-bite design allows you to customize the mouthpiece by taking an impression of your mouth. You can further adjust the fit by sliding the lower component forward in 1-millimeter increments.

While the SnoreRx’s design is somewhat bulkier than other mouthpieces, the extra sturdiness may be a good tradeoff for users who prioritize longevity. According to the website, the SnoreRx usually lasts about 9 to 11 months, although this will differ depending on the person. If you grind your teeth or clench your jaw while you sleep, you may wear out your device faster.

SnoreRx vs. SnoreRx Plus

Buyers can choose between two versions of the SnoreRx mouthguard: the SnoreRx and the SnoreRx Plus. The devices are very similar in terms of design and performance, but the SnoreRx Plus provides additional adjustability options. These allow your jaw to  move up and down more easily when the mouthpiece is in place.

Pros and Cons

The SnoreRx’s thicker design might not fit very small mouths, but its durability and easy customization can deliver good results for many sleepers.

Pros
Cons
  • Set up, including the boil-and-bite tooth impression, is quick and easy
  • Jaw position is adjustable to 1 millimeter and locks into place
  • Air holes allow comfortable mouth breathing
  • Outlasts similar devices
  • Somewhat larger design can be uncomfortable for smaller mouths
  • More time-consuming care and cleaning
  • Some sleepers report side effects like dry mouth, excess drooling, and initial soreness

Who Should Use the SnoreRx Mouthpiece?

The SnoreRx can be used as an anti-snoring device by adults with good physical and oral health. However, it has not been approved for treatment of sleep apnea

It’s always a good idea to check with your doctor or dentist before using an anti-snoring device. This is especially true if you have certain breathing disorders or dental work near the back of the mouth. You should also be sure to report your use of the SnoreRx to your dentist at your next regular exam.

Who Is It Ideal For?
Who Should Avoid It?
  • Adults with good overall physical and oral health
  • Sleepers looking to reduce snoring
  • Sleepers with dental implants that have been inserted within the last 12 months
  • Those with loose teeth or gum disease
  • People with respiratory disorders, central sleep apnea, or a history of TMD
  • Those with braces, dentures, or other oral appliances

How Does the SnoreRx Mouthpiece Work?

Snoring happens when the muscles and soft tissue at the back of the throat relax during sleep, partially blocking the flow of air. Each breath drawn through the narrowed passageway causes these tissues to flap, creating a snoring noise.

Anti-snoring devices like the SnoreRx are designed to minimize snoring so you can sleep more comfortably. The SnoreRx is a mandibular advancement device (MAD) that works by drawing the lower jaw forward and gently holding it in place. This new position allows for increased airflow in the upper airway and the back of the throat.

To get the SnoreRx ready for use, you’ll need to boil a cup of water and soak the device in it for two minutes to soften the copolymer plastic. Afterward, briefly rinse the device in cold water, then bite down on the softened plastic for three minutes to create an impression of your teeth. Let the mouthpiece soak in the cold water for 10 minutes to set the impression.

Once it’s set up, the SnoreRx can be adjusted at 1-millimeter increments. The company recommends beginning at the original setting and advancing by 1 millimeter every two to three nights as needed until snoring stops.

Performance

The SnoreRx is an FDA-approved anti-snoring device designed to minimize snoring.  While it’s not officially approved for treatment of sleep apnea, it can help alleviate snoring by repositioning the jaw and tongue to keep your airways clear. Its customization options also make it a good option for a wide range of sleepers.

Price and Size Options

While the device is available in a universal size that fits most mouths, the SnoreRx is also customizable and adjustable. Buyers can purchase one SnoreRx for $59.99 or two for $99.98.

Design

Engineered to accommodate most jaws, the SnoreRx has a boil-and-bite design that provides a customized fit. Sleepers can also adjust the forward positioning of the lower jaw in 1-millimeter increments up to 6 millimeters.

Materials

The SnoreRx mouthpiece is made from medical-grade copolymer plastic. The outer tray is firm, and the soft inner pad features a proprietary material that retains dental impressions.

Lifespan

The SnoreRx is designed to last 9 to 11 months. However, those who grind their teeth or clench their jaw at night may find they need a replacement sooner.

Cleaning and Maintenance

SnoreRx recommends daily cleaning of the device with a toothbrush and toothpaste. They also advise staying away from more abrasive cleaners like mouthwash or bleach. After cleaning the SnoreRx, allow it to air dry.
