Narval CC is a dental sleep apnea device offered by ResMed.
Narval CC sleep apnea oral appliance looks like a night guard or sports mouth guard. However, these devices are FDA cleared for the treatment of sleep apnea and are customized to move the mandible forward to open the airway while asleep. This reduces or eliminates snoring and obstructive pauses during sleep. These are also called mandibular repositioning devices (MRD).
In order to obtain a mandibular repositioning device (MRD) or sleep apnea device, like the Narval CC, you should seek assistance from a dentist and/or physician who has experience in sleep disorders and sleep apnea. A sleep dentist or dentist with experience in oral appliances will perform a dental evaluation.
The benefits of the Narval sleep device is that is very lightweight and less bulky. These features ultimately lead to higher comfort. Higher comfort levels obviously lead to higher compliance and better treatment outcomes.
The Narval CC also articulates between the top piece and bottom piece. This simply means that it moves – which allows for talking and drinking.
Patients who are evaluated for sleep apnea oral appliances often undergo a sleep study, or HST home sleep test. This is necessary for a diagnosis of sleep apnea. Patients often have a second sleep test with oral appliance therapy in place to determine the device’s efficacy.
The Narval cc MRD is adjustable in 1 mm increments by up to 15 mm of protrusion. This means that the lower part can be moved forward, per a sleep dentist’s recommendation, in order to reduce or eliminate pauses in breathing and snoring.
Sleep apnea is a potentially deadly sleep disorder that is characterized by snoring, pauses in breathing during sleep, excessive daytime sleepiness, and other symptoms. Those who have untreated obstructive sleep apnea are at higher risk of heart attacks, strokes, heart complications, and deadly car accidents.
They are indicated for the treatment of mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea, and also for severe sleep apnea in patients who are unable to use CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) “sleep apnea machine”.
In studies, eighty percent of users of the Narval sleep apnea device wore it seven nights per week during a 6-week treatment trial. Night time compliance evaluation demonstrated that the device was used for 6.2 nights per week over an 18 month period.
